I want to know my cat's habits. I want to record the times we spent together.
I want to know what she usually does after grooming, after eating, after doing her little cat activities.
That's what pushed me to build PetLogs.
It makes stalking my cat painfully easy.
It started when she was sick. I tried to count how many times she sneezes a day โ just to know if she was getting better or not.
But after she got better... I still couldn't stop using the app.
I started adding wacky logs:
๐ง Climbing tv table
๐ด Sleeping
๐ฌ Bites me
๐ Licking my hands
๐ญ Licking my forehead
It's such a joy to remember these memories when I slack off at work and just scroll through pictures of her.
The Bite Experiment ๐งช
Sometimes it's fun to do experiments with her too.
I noticed from the logs that she always bites me at night. So I went and researched it โ turns out, "Your cat is overstimulated, try playing with your cat for 10 minutes."
The thing is... I played with her not for 10 minutes. It was almost 1 hour. And her energy never dropped.
After many trial and errors:
โ Stood completely still like a statue for 2 minutes every time she bit me โ didn't work.
โ Ran around the apartment to make her exhausted โ I was the one exhausted at 1 AM instead.
I finally figured out the real issue: she never had alone time.
So I moved her food, water, and litter box to another room and closed the door until morning. (Well โ sometimes I'd visit her too if I got lonely at night.)
And yeah. I have PetLogs to thank for that. It let me see exactly what was normal for her, and what was just random chaos.
Building It For Klutz People Like Me
My wife and I genuinely love using this product. We've used it daily for 3 months, and I can see myself using it for a really long time.
What do I like about it? Well โ I'm a klutz. I'm the guy who will ask "where in the settings again?" and has a really bad memory about software in general.
So in PetLogs, I tried to make the UI really intuitive for a klutz like me. I tried hard to make every button click feel satisfying. And I tried not to think too much about data structures โ I'm doing this not to make my database prettier, I genuinely want to make it easily comprehensible to humans.
About Your Data
As for the database? Turns out โ I don't want to know anything about your data. So the data only lives in your browser's IndexedDB and your own Google Drive.
It has paywalls, but honestly the free tier is generous โ it lets you view logs from the past month. If you want to see all your data, just pay me once for lifetime access.
It's such a joy for me to build and use it these past 3 months. I hope you'll feel the same way too. ๐พ
